What are the benefits of counselling?

The counseling process is, in many ways, like an educational experience. The individual can learn more about him/herself, but also acquires new skills. Sometimes, counseling involves learning more about a particular condition (e.g., depression, anxiety, substance use disorders) by which the person is affected, so that he/she can better understand treatment options. Below are some examples of what clients can gain from personal counseling:

  • improved communication and interpersonal skills

  • greater self-acceptance and self-esteem

  • ability to change self-defeating behaviors/habits

  • better expression and management of emotions, including anger

  • relief from depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions

  • increased confidence and decision-making skills

  • ability to manage stress effectively

  • improved problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities

  • greater sense of self and purpose

  • recognition of distorted thinking

We offer both in person and online counselling.

What is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)?

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a skill-based approach to talk therapy. When you start CBT, you and your therapist will work together to identify your individual problems and concerns. You’ll also learn to integrate strategic techniques in response to these issues.

CBT is based on the understanding that our emotional experiences are directly related to our thoughts, beliefs, and actions – and therefore, it is possible to change our emotional experiences by examining and altering our thoughts and behaviors.

The duration of CBT treatment varies, typically ranging from six sessions to several months. You will typically meet with your therapist once a week.

Over time, CBT will help you gain self-awareness of:

  • Your unique thinking and behavioral patterns

  • The impact your beliefs and actions have on your overall mental health

  • How you can incorporate techniques and skills to improve your mental health

What is Motivational Interviewing?

Motivational interviewing is a therapeutic approach that aims to help individuals identify and resolve their ambivalence about changing certain behaviors. The technique was developed in the 1980s by William R. Miller and Stephen Rollnick, and it has since been widely used in addiction treatment, healthcare, and other fields.

The basic premise of motivational interviewing is that people are more likely to change their behavior if they feel that they have control over the decision-making process. Rather than trying to persuade or coerce individuals into making changes, motivational interviewing focuses on helping individuals explore their own motivations, values, and goals.

Motivational interviewing is based on four core principles:

1. Express empathy: The counsellor should try to understand the client's perspective and show empathy towards their feelings and struggles.

2. Develop discrepancy: The counsellor should help the client identify the discrepancy between their current behavior and their goals or values.

3. Roll with resistance: The counsellor should avoid arguing or confronting the client and instead acknowledge their resistance and work with them to overcome it.

4. Support self-efficacy: The counsellor should help the client develop confidence in their ability to change and take steps towards their goals.
